Gay Rights!
This morning, I was reading an article about George Smitherman. An MPP who is running for mayor in Toronto. I don’t know much about him, but I know that he is gay, and is in the process of adopting a child. You can read the article here. My problem begins with the comments being made by readers. I am saddened to know that we still live in a society filled with homophobia and discrimination, and I am so tired of people telling me, that we have come so far, that the fight is now over, open your eyes, it has just begun! This man is facing resistance in his want to provide a child with the basics of life, why? Because of his sexual orientation. People comment saying things like being gay is a mental illness. Well! Let’s go with that for a moment. I being gay am mentally ill, that’s fine, but why then should I be treated like a bag of dog shit that you kick to the side to get your morning coffee? If I am mentally ill, that would still entail something totally out of my control that should be met with empathy and understanding, no?
I know that the comments on this article only represent a small gathering of people, but I can’t help but feel so mad.
I am GAY! And I will live my life to the fullest regardless of what some loser thinks is the right thing to do. I am ME!
